Aged Stone

There’s so much knowledge we have access to, with so many things to explore with our minds.  We know about such things as the winter solstice and the cycles of the planet and now know why stone age humans picked the location to build Stonehenge.  Apparently it’s located slap bang at the end of a natural phenomenon of deep ridges carved out of the bedrock, caused by glaciers, pointing straight towards the winter solstice sunset.  It must have got heads scratching and wonder.

We’re no longer from the stone age, we have expanded our species and our knowledge.  We need to stop taking from the planet without return.  We need compassion, peace and the combination of technology and planet~sense if humanity has a chance in the future.  Meat has to come off of the menu for so many reasons.  I might stand in the centre of Gors Fawr aged stone at some time during this 2017 winter’s solstice and make a few compassionate wishes for humanity.

DIY Traditions

Do I have to follow traditions? No I thankfully don’t.  Any one of us can pick out ones that make sense or make some new ones of our own.  Personally I can see the logic to have the tradition of using up the contents of the larder over the winter and restocking it during harvest.  Yet not being a sheep I find it increasingly difficult to follow the crowd and get excited at the prospect of eating the body of a violent death whilst pulling a cracker.  Anyways, my son a few years ago, created a lovely new tradition:

A helping word

Today am I telling you two things I hope you find helpful:

  1. Try not to forget your humble packed lunch, but if you do forget, you can be like many others on this planet and go without that meal.  You do not NEED to buy expensive take away.  Going without food occasionally won’t kill you, in fact it is scientifically proven it does you good.
  2. Against all the odds, be at peace with yourself and your life.  Maybe start to be the one that enjoys washing up for it’s meditative quality, during the “Don’t worry about the financial strain, let’s buy with money we can’t spare, to be like everyone else onMASS!”

Poncey YettaOthers will ignore advice and that is their business.  Others will misunderstand and that is their business.  I don’t like this pressure people are putting on themselves this stupid time of year.  Don’t buy anything unnecessary.  Don’t buy for others, especially things you have no idea what they need.  If you have spare cash, look to the family member that might NEED it.  All this avarice isn’t necessary, please don’t be pulled into it, because you are all beautiful, kind, loving and loved, sentient beings, so job’s done and no need to give a brass monkey’s ponsey yetta hat!

Over forty years ago, along the north side of our garden, hubby’s family dumped tree trunks and covering them with rough stone filled sod.  It now stands around four feet high, with well established trees, shrubs and native plants in it.  Some might call it a simple Hugal bank or perhaps Hugelkultur pronounced “Hoo-gul-culture” meaning culture or hill mound.  Whatever it’s gonna be called, it’s a valuable barrier from the cold air flowing down from the field above in the north, from water during heavy rainfall leading to soil erosion.  The phrase permaculture didn’t arrive until the late 70’s, but this permanent looking ecologically sound hugal bank, is a sure sign of what permaculture stands for, with its carbon sequestration.  I’m sure there’s future archaeology to be found in there too, from my hubby’s childhood, his siblings and our children who played on it also.  So far I’ve found plenty of plastic toys, parts of clothes pegs, once some WW2 shells and an actual spent out land mine!      Hugal bank

Notes:

  • It would be a bad idea if you live in the northern hemisphere, to build a hugal bank on the south side of a plot of land, as it would trap the cold air during the winter months.
  • Sod means about a spade full of soil.

Discarding the noun!

Bexy (noun) is typing (verb) a long winded blog post to explain herself (something sometimes we all might find helpful).  I prefer a quiet life VERBING (doing) vegan, than to be all up in someone’s face NOUNING (naming) myself [VEGAN].  I really hate having to label myself and saying “I am vegan”  can put a dampener on any {{{jiggle~giggles}}}.  It’s like come running in announcing that I’ve deliberately run over some old dear who was walking (verb) over the zebra~crossing (noun) just outside, saying nonchalantly that I’ve left the ol’ baggins and her shopping trolly squished all “jammy bloodins” over the F***ing road!  Anyways, responses to the word “Vegan” sometimes make some react so aggressively, with all the pre~programmed and defensive rudeness of a lout.  Sometimes all I want is a kind, peaceful life and a F***ing tasty ethical bite to eat! < rant 😛

I want to be vegan (verb), looking (verb) for vegan clothes and generally being a happy bunny not exploiting others.  I invite you not to pigeon hole me, as there we have it beloveds “I  will vegan a lot in private and plenty of times in public, where maybe sometimes I might be caught on CCTV doing it vigorously!” and that’s just the way it is!

We all have habits.  I have a few great ones, but I wonder what ones aren’t doing any good and how I can dump that limited time wasteful shit.  I wonder what new ones I could start.  Apparently habits are really powerful, like magical spells that lead us to do the same shit at the ring of a silent bell.  I remember Pavlov and his dogs, but seriously, maybe there’s something in this habit forming thing.  If I could just harness that power.

  • Get out that pretty bangle with the little bells on and create a new improved habit when hearing them jingle.
  • Get new more powerful silent magical bells to create great new improved habits that create a kinder work.
  • Start using said bells often.

Maybe some of the habits can include clothes.  I might only keep those I can wear comfortably anywhere and stick to wearing them (habitual don’t you think).

Super Moon

Get your camera ready beloveds, for Sunday night there’s a huge supermoon!  The moon will look larger, probably scare the beegeebus out of some (I’ve been there in the past when living in Orkney), but it is a natural phenomenon (don’t stop the car and do a Chickenlicken “The sky is falling”  like I did that time when I saw my first ever huge supermoon on the horizon).  It occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth on it’s cycle by around 30,000 miles.  I wonder how it will effect me this year?  Anyways, this supermoon is when the moon is in Perigee phase close to us.  When the moon is furthest away from the Earth it is in it’s Apogee phase.  Enjoy and take perhaps some photos from where you live.

Sicilian style crisp butty

Going to start making a batch of these chickpea snacks this morning.  These are easy enough, but you do have to add a little time between the start and finish processes.  Panelle  pronounced “P’nelly”, is a Sicilian snack of chickpea polenta, cut and made into fritters, using very few ingredients:

  • Chickpea flour
  • Water
  • Salt (not much)
  • Herb of choice (I used dry sage and garlic granules, others use fresh chopped parsley…)
  • Oil for frying

I add the flour, dry sage, garlic and a pinch of salt to boiling water in a saucepan, stiring over a low to medium heat.  I don’t stop mixing and I do NOT let it re-boil until it resembles a very thick paste ball.  At this point I take it off the heat and place it into an icing bag to cool, then in the “frigo” (French for fridge).  When I want the snack, I thinly slice the dough and cook in hot oil until golden brown.  Uncooked, uncut dough keeps well in the frigo for a couple of days and you can then just cut slices off from the wide end, as and when.  I find it’s best to make the dough in the morning ready to cook later.  If you want to make a meal of panelle crisps, serve with a wedge of lemon on the side of the plate, some watercress and a roll.

p.s.  The wacky scientist in me wonders if prior to cooking, I put some vegan cheese and peas on one and covering with another, brushing them with oil, whether I could cook them in the sandwich toaster?
